Oakland Temple.

I love the Oakland Temple. I know, I know, I say that about everything. But it’s true! And I love photographing weddings at the Oakland Temple. In my opinion, there are few LDS temples that compare in beauty to the Oakland Temple. The landscaping year round is breathtaking. From the gorgeous tulips in February and March down to the poppies in November…the Oakland Temple is always a gorgeous backdrop for your wedding photographs. With a rooftop garden that has an iconic view of the Bay, staircases with unique architectural details & the interesting gates, there is something interesting to photograph at almost every turn. Not only is the landscaping incredible, but the temple grounds boast two beautiful water fountains & a killer view of San Francisco. Everyone is welcome to be on the temple grounds, regardless of whether you are a member of the church. The grounds are open to the public and everyone is welcome to head to the rooftop garden to enjoy the beauty.

A few photography tips to consider when planning a session at the temple…

• There is a hill about 5 minutes away that overlooks the temple. The grass there is green in the spring and golden in the fall. Going there and taking photos adds around 30 extra minutes but if you have time between your ceremony and your reception, I highly recommend going. It’s nice to have more photos with the temple in the backdrop from a different vantage point.
• Family and friends who aren’t attending your session can either enjoy the grounds or hang out in the visitors center. It’s air conditioned, has restrooms and lots to do while people wait.
• There is only one set of large stairs in front of the temple. This is where most couples have their extended family photos taken (and sometimes their giant group photo). The temple for the most part is never terribly busy, but you may have to wait a few minutes if there is a group ahead of you.
• Keep in mind that the Oakland temple is honestly great no matter the weather. There are ALWAYS spots for photos, even if your special day is rainy. I’ve photographed dozens of rainy day weddings here and do not worry, there are gorgeous spots even when it is raining.
• Ideally I think 2 hours is a good amount of time to spend at the temple. That about covers the temple exit, candid photos as you exit, family formals, wedding party photos and then the couple portraits. It might seem like a long time but I always think it’s the best amount of time for everything you’d need.

I have had the opportunity to photograph over 300 weddings at the Oakland Temple & it has not ceased to amaze me. If you are an LDS bride & groom looking for a temple that is not crowded, with interesting architecture & gorgeous landscaping, the Oakland Temple might be right up your alley.
